Acropolis closes as heatwave grips Greece
The Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be shuttered
as a heatwave hits southern Europe. The landmark is set to close at 3pm local time on both Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures are expected to reach almost 40C. It will be the third time this year that the site has closed due to extreme weather.
Heatwave alerts issued across Europe
The extreme heat is spreading across the continent with the UK, Spain, Portugal and France all expected to face temperatures well above 30C.
In Spain, the heat is expected to be particularly intense in the east and south-east with almost 48 hours of nonstop sunshine.
