Akon's Vision in Senegal Falters
The aptly named "Akon City" was to be a US$6 billion futuristic metropolis fueled by cryptocurrency and incorporating sustainable technologies. It was the vision of music megastar Akon and his company, AKoin. However, the project has faced several setbacks and is now reportedly abandoned, according to the BBC.
The planned city, located in the singer's homeland of Senegal, faced financial issues and the subsequent withdrawal of investors. BBC reported that the site is now overgrown with weeds and encroached upon by the surrounding jungle. The few workers remaining on-site confirm that development has halted entirely.
Impact on Crypto and Sustainability Efforts
The story highlights the risks of nascent cryptocurrency and the challenges of adopting sustainable technologies. Akon City was envisioned as a "100% crypto-based city" and would have been one of the first sustainable cities, powered by renewable energy sources. With this project stalling, it may impact future adoption and investor confidence in these emerging sectors.
Akon's Career and Philanthropy
Akon has had a prolific career in music and has also been active in philanthropy, particularly in Africa. He has worked closely with UNICEF and started his own charity, Akon Lighting Africa, to bring solar power to African countries.
