Benin names Spike Lee and wife ambassadors for African-Americans in the US
Spike Lee's recent comments on racism and black empowerment have landed him and his wife as ambassadors to Benin in Africa.
Benin's President Patrice Talon named the couple as special cultural ambassadors for African-Americans in the United States. The position intends to help foster ties between the countries and encourage African-Americans to visit the country.
The Beninese presidency said in a statement that Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, will help facilitate "exchange programs and projects" between the two countries. The statement also said the Lees will "serve as catalysts for exchanges and partnerships in various areas, including culture, sports, the arts, entertainment, and innovation."
The Lees have not yet commented on their appointment.
