The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) denounced the Israeli military's decision to airdrop coupons for fast food and other items in Gaza as an act of desperation that will not solve the humanitarian crisis gripping the Palestinian territory.
The airdrop, scheduled for Wednesday, comes as the Palestinian economy is on the verge of collapse due to Israeli blockades, instability, and the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the agency.
UNRWA spokesperson Jeremy Bowen said in a statement,
"The airdrop is a blatant attempt by the Israeli government to shift attention away from its responsibility to help address the deteriorating situation in Gaza."
The agency urged the Israeli government to work with the Palestinian Authority and other international donors to find a long-term solution to the crisis, focusing on creating jobs and stimulating the local economy through trade opportunities.
The airdrop, which is being promoted with the slogan "Operation Good Deed", has been widely criticized on social media as a PR stunt that fails to address the root causes of the crisis in Gaza.
