The Italian government has recently introduced a list of individuals and entities sanctioned due to the conflict, including Gergiev. The decision to cancel his performance was made after consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international promotion agency Italian Ways.

A spokesperson for the Ravenna Festival commented on the cancellation, saying it was a prudent decision in light of current circumstances.
