Crackdown on Pakistan's illegal big cats after pet lion attack

A lion escaped in the city of Lahore, attacking a woman and two children, triggering public outrage. Following this incident, a crackdown has been launched in the province of Punjab in Pakistan.

Pet Owners in Punjab Face Heavy Fines and Jail Time

Those found to be keeping big cats as illegal pets may face hefty fines and even imprisonment. Authorities intend to enforce the The Wildlife (Protection, Preservation and Conservation) Act, 1975, under which violators may be subject to fines of up to $2,500 or even imprisonment for a year, or both.

Public Safety and Animal Welfare Concerns Cited

Officials cited concerns for public safety and animal welfare as key reasons for the crackdown. They emphasized that big cats are not suitable as pets, and that the proper care and environment required to keep these animals safe and healthy are unavailable in private homes.
