The 85-year-old victim, a revered figure in the sport, was struck

While out jogging near his home on a summer evening.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the fatal hit-and-run

That killed Jim Peters, dubbed the "father of long-distance running"

In the United Kingdom and a world record-setter, during a routine evening jog.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm local time on July 16, 2025

In the affluent suburban neighborhood where Peters lived. The suspect

Was taken into custody at the scene after attempting to flee on foot.

Peters was well-known in the athletic world for his accomplishments

And his advocacy for the benefits of fitness at any age.

He set world records for 10 miles and 25 kilometers in his age group

That still stood more than a decade after his retirement from competition.

Fellow runners expressed sadness and shock at the news, with one

Writing, "A running icon has been taken from us far too soon"

At a candlelight vigil held in Peters' honor the following day.
