First malaria treatment for babies approved for use

FDA Approves New Malaria Drug for Babies

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world's first malaria treatment for babies. The improved formulation of the original drug is intended for the treatment of malaria in infants aged six months and above. The new formulation is a liquid that can be administered directly into the mouth, making it easier to use in resource-limited health facilities and suitable for areas where malaria is most prevalent. This is a significant step forward in the fight against malaria, which claims the life of a child every two minutes, primarily in Africa. The new formulation will be available in the second half of 2023 through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) delivering it to those in need.
