Gaza crisis: Chaos and confusion as hundreds killed in Palestine

Reaction as death toll rises in Palestine

Gaza's health ministry says more than 230 people have been killed in the past three days as Israeli airstrikes pounded the Palestinian territory. The deadly bombardment, which began on Sunday, has also injured more than 650 people, with at least 30 of them critical, the health ministry said. The intense violence has triggered an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the blockaded territory, home to some 2.2 million people.

The Israeli military said it had carried out airstrikes targeting militant groups in Gaza responsible for launching rockets into Israel, located just 70 kilometers away. It said operations would continue until the threat from Palestinian militant groups was neutralized.

Reactions

The Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the latest Israeli aggression and ways to end the occupation of Palestinian territories. The Arab League called for an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis.

France condemned the Palestinian militant groups for renewing violence through rocket launches and called for an immediate ceasefire. It called on Israel to exercise restraint and show the utmost restraint in the difficult situation in Gaza.

What's next?

Gaza's health ministry said rescue teams arrived at the scene of a strike in the Beach Camp neighborhood of Gaza City, where dozens of people are reported to have been injured and several houses destroyed.
