Heartbreak as cash-strapped Nigerians abandon their pets
Nigerians in financial difficulties are abandoning their pets, with dog owners reportedly leaving their pets tied to trees and bins in public places. One society is trying to help rehome the dogs, but the lack of funds and growing number of pets is creating difficulties.
The Nigerian Animal Rescue Initiative (NARI) says it is seeing a rising number of dogs abandoned in places where they cannot fend for themselves.
Dog owners are ashamed to tell friends and family they can no longer afford to care for their pets, according to the group.
