Japan islanders sleepless after 900 earthquakes in two weeks
The swarm of tremors has disrupted the peaceful island chain
Residents of Japan's Ryukyu Islands are experiencing a two-week long sleepless night due to a swarm of earthquakes, ranging from tiny tremors to sizable quakes. The string of tremors began on June 28th and has already occurred 900 times by July 3rd. Many of these quakes are surprisingly powerful, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 5.4. The frequent shakes have resulted in over 10,000 calls to the island's crisis hotline with residents concerned about their safety. Although the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has stated that these earthquakes are normal and occur roughly once a decade, many residents remain anxious as the tremors show no signs of stopping. The JMA continues to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of all residents on the island.
