Mass evacuations as wildfire rages in Greek island of Crete

Officials Order Mass Evacuation in Cretan Town

A wildfire that has been raging for multiple days on the eastern coast of Crete, Greece, forced authorities to order mass evacuations. Residents of Iraklion, a town near the island's eastern coast, were ordered to leave immediately, and the fire was approaching residential areas. The fire had burned tens of thousands of acres of forest and was only partially contained after several days.

Over a Hundred Firefighting Vehicles at the Scene

More than 100 firefighting vehicles and water-dumping aircraft were at the scene to combat the fire, but the extreme heat and difficult, rocky terrain have made it challenging to stop the fire's spread. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.
