Migrants tortured in El Salvador, Venezuela says

Deportees from US face torture, abuse in their home countries: Report

A new report by a migrant rights group highlights cases of alleged torture and abuse against migrants deported from the United States to El Salvador and Venezuela. The stories include beatings, electrocution, and sexual assault, with victims often too afraid to seek help. Human Rights Watch interviewed more than 140 migrants and conducted follow-up research in Venezuela and El Salvador.

Key findings

  • Over 100 migrants interviewed reported torture upon returning to their home countries.
  • Migrants were often targeted for extortion and robbery upon their return.
  • Many migrants tried to leave El Salvador and Venezuela again, to escape the violence and instability.

Comments from the governments

The US and Venezuelan governments have not commented on the report. The Salvadoran President, Bukele, commented on Twitter, We are not going to support institutions that violate human rights and neither are we going to allow the citizen to suffer the same thing that the migrants suffered who were deported. Not in El Salvador. The report will put further focus on the treatment of migrants, and the ordeals they face when they are deported.
