However, his remarks soon took a controversial turn, with him comparing the Iranian government's recent strikes on civilian targets in Iraq to the WWII atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Reactions:

The WH released a statement saying, "President Trump's comments at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park were consistent with his messaging on Iran - that the US will not tolerate the Iranian regime's threats and provocations, and that Iran's recent attacks in Iraq are unacceptable."

For his part, Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei Khamenei condemned President Trump's comments, Khamenei's website said.
