Outrage as Trump compares Iran strikes to Japan atomic bombing

Context: Trump's remarks at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

"These barbaric actions are totally unacceptable. The US stands with Iran and all of Iran's people," said President Trump at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. However, his remarks soon took a controversial turn, with him comparing the Iranian government's recent strikes on civilian targets in Iraq to the WWII atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"It is a sad reminder that even today, the US is willing to use disproportionate violence to achieve its aims," Iran's ambassador to the UN said in a statement. "Trump's outrageous analogy echoes the American FP that Iran's recent attacks on Iraq are 'worse than WWII'. "

Reactions:

The WH released a statement saying, "President Trump's comments at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park were consistent with his messaging on Iran - that the US will not tolerate the Iranian regime's threats and provocations, and that Iran's recent attacks in Iraq are unacceptable."

For his part, Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei Khamenei condemned President Trump's comments, Khamenei's website said.
