An oil portrait of India's founding father and leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi, has been sold at auction for more than $200,000, according to the auction house based in the United Kingdom.

Who Was Involved?

The painting was purchased by an art collector who wishes to remain anonymous. The artwork has been authenticated by the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, India, and comes with a letter of authentication.

When Was It Created?

Created in the late 1930s by Indian artist Nandalal Bose, it is believed to be one of two surviving oil paintings of Gandhi created by Bose, who was a leading artist of the Bengal School of Art. The work last sold publicly over 30 years ago.

What's Next?

The new owner intends to loan the portrait to a museum in the near future, hopefully, enabling the painting to be viewed and enjoyed by the public.
