Saudi Arabia takes action to prevent heat-related fatalities as Hajj pilgrimage begins
The Saudi government is taking innovative measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims amid extreme heat and humidity as the Hajj pilgrimage begins. The Kingdom is introducing a range of initiatives to protect vulnerable pilgrims and prevent heat-related illnesses.
Highlights of the preventive measures
- The Ministry of Health reported that over 5,000 victims of heat-related illnesses received treatment in 2022. To mitigate these incidents, the Ministry has established 55 emergency departments and deployed an additional 100 ambulances.
- The Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) has also intensified its preparedness, stocking up on supplies and equipment to aid pilgrims in need. It has established 13 centres and deployed over 2,000 staff members across Hajj sites.
- The Saudi Metrology Department has installed advanced devices at various locations to monitor weather conditions, forecasting heat stress and alerting authorities to take necessary actions.
- The Water and Electricity Company has ensured a stable and robust power supply, installing cooling fans at congested areas. It has also increased the number of water tanks and refill stations to help pilgrims stay hydrated.
- The General Directorate of Civil Defense has arranged workshops to train staff in providing medical care to those affected by heat stress. Additional medical staff will be stationed at each site.
Emphasizing resilience and preparedness
The Saudi government is committed to ensuring that pilgrims can worship safely and comfortably. These preventive measures are essential in safeguarding one of the world's largest gatherings, addressing potential health risks, and promoting resilience in the face of challenging environmental conditions.
