South African politician sacked over visit to fugitive pastor
South Africa's tourism minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, was dismissed on 6 June 2022 after being accused of visiting a fugitive pastor, Penuel Mnguni, two years after he fled the country while facing serious fraud charges.
The visit took place a day after the pastor hosted a discussion on his podcast regarding the suspension of the African National Congress (ANC) leader, Oscar Mabuyane. The president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has stated that the visit was a clear violation of the tourism minister's oath of office and has vowed to take action against corruption and mismanagement within the ANC. The dismissal comes ahead of the ANC's leadership election next month, with critics suggesting that the move was an attempt to deflect criticism of the party.
