Trump deserves Open at Turnberry, says son
President donates course for major
President Donald Trump's son, Eric, has said his father deserves to host the Open Championship, the UK's oldest golf tournament.
The former president had his Turnberry course in Ayrshire voted in as one of the venues for the tournament, which is organised by the R&A.
It will be held at the course in 2024, with the president's son telling the BBC that his father "has done a lot for the game of golf, and [the Open] is one of the greatest tournaments".
The Open is due to be held at Turnberry in 2030, with R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers saying the course will be modified out of recognition to "make it a true test for the world's best players".
Previous hosting controversies
Mr. Slumbers' comments come after the Trump Organisation was criticized over its hosting of the Women's PGA Championship at one of its courses in Texas earlier this year.
Organizers said the course, which was designed by Mr. Trump, was not "set up" in a way that favored one player over another.
But multiple players, including two-time major winner Lydia Ko, said that wasn't the case, with many complaining the course was set up to favor those who hit the ball furthest.
In a statement, the Trump Organisation said: "Since day one, we have ensured the PGA of America, LGPA, and all of the tournaments we have hosted have had full control of the golf courses, course set-up, and all other tournament related activities."
