The United Nations is calling for an investigation into the recent killings near a site in Gaza where aid is distributed, stating the need to respect and protect humanitarian workers. This comes as Israel lifted a restriction on goods entering the territory, which had been in place since 2021. The situation in Gaza has been described as a "humanitarian catastrophe" by the UN humanitarian chief.
A UN spokesman said that "those responsible for targeting and attacking civilians and humanitarian personnel must be held accountable." The spokesman also urged all parties to respect and protect humanitarian and medical personnel, as well as civilians, in accordance with international law.
The recent uptick in violence comes after years of conflict, with the UN warning that unless humanitarian aid is increased, Gaza could collapse.
