US Navy to rename ship honouring gay rights leader and veteran Harvey Milk
The USS Harvey Milk will be the first ship named after a leader of the LGBTQ community
The US Navy has announced that they will rename a ship currently under construction as the USS Harvey Milk, in honour of the gay rights leader and veteran. Milk, who was a Navy sailor himself, was assassinated in 1978 for his role in advocating for LGBTQ rights. This decision follows the approval of a renaming proposal put forward by the Navy earlier this year, intended to recognise and celebrate the contributions of minority communities. The decision has been widely celebrated by the LGBTQ+ community and supporters of racial justice.
