Venice protesters claim victory as Bezos changes wedding venue
The No Space for Bezos activist group has claimed a victory for their cause after the billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos changed the venue of his impending wedding, avoiding a protest held on the platform of a Venice church.
What sparked the protest
The upcoming marriage between Bezos and Lauren Sánchez has drawn attention due to its scheduled venue: the medieval island of San Giorgio Maggiore, in Venice. Supporters of the disgraced founder of Amazon believe that the picturesque city, struggling to cope with increasing tourism, has no space for Bezos.
The changed plans
The activist group, which arranged a demonstration on the steps of the church, announced their success on their official Twitter account, stating that the wedding plans had been changed. No specific details about the new venue have been disclosed, but the group claims that the original venue was changed to avoid their protest.
A symbolic victory
To some extent, the small victory has been blown out of proportion, as it is unlikely that the protest would have significantly disrupted the wedding plans or led to a change of heart for the happy couple.
Nevertheless, the No Space for Bezos group has declared that this is the "first symbolic victory for the movement," as their primary aim was to bring attention to the very real issues surrounding over-tourism in Venice.
