Watch: Defiance and anger on the streets of LA
Paramount district clashes with ICE agents
A second day of protests and unrest occurred in the city of Los Angeles as residents of a predominantly Latino district clashed with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) federal agents. Officers used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowds. US President Donald Trump has stated that he will be deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to California to deal with the protests, which were sparked by raids targeting undocumented migrants. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the move "purposefully inflammatory" and believed it would anger residents.
Trump's inflammatory speech
President Trump tweeted earlier on Friday, discussing the "rioting and violence" and stating that it "must be stopped immediately". He tweeted that the "Radical Left Democrats" were responsible for the current situation and that the "great people of California demand law and order!". The recent protests and civil unrest have occurred in urban areas with majority Latino populations, which have been subjected to the harshest ICE raids.
Governor's response
California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to Trump's tweet, stating that the President's rhetoric was furthering the anger and tensions amongst residents. Newsom declared that Trump was "desperate for attention", and that he needed to "start by putting on [his] listening ears, and respectfully and empathically addressing the concerns of immigrant communities".
