Earth & Atmospheric Science

The earthquake that struck Russia this morning triggered a tsunami alert for the country's eastern coast. The USGS registered the quake at magnitude Richter 7.8 near the city of Vladivostok. The PTWC issued a tsunami warning for the Sakhalin Islands and Russia's Kamchatka but not for Japan, South Korea, or China's coasts.

What we know so far

According to the PTWC, the wave-height readings ranged from 0.4m (1ft 4in) to as high as 2m (6ft 7in) off the coast of the Sakhalin Islands and Kamchatka, respectively. Though these initial waves aren't expected to cause significant damage, warnings urge locals to stay away from the coast and prepare for possible stronger or additional waves.

Russia's EMAs are also on the scene, working with local authorities to ensure everyone's safety. We will continue to bring you updates as they occur.
