WHO condemns Israeli raid on central Gaza residence and warehouse attack

Resident and warehouse targeted

The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly condemned Israel's raid on a central Gaza residence and warehouse on Tuesday. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people and wounded at least 60 others, has raised concerns about the impact on civilians and the already fragile healthcare system in Gaza.

Spokesperson highlights

In a statement, WHO spokesperson Dr. Palitha Mahipala said that the attacks endangered the lives of health workers and compromised the ability of hospitals and health facilities to provide essential care. Dr. Mahipala emphasized the need for all parties to abide by their obligations under international law to protect civilians and ensure the safety and security of health facilities and health workers.

Rising concerns over civilian casualties

The attack has also raised concerns about the increasingly heavy civilian toll in the region. The Palestine Health Ministry said that among the dead were 16 civilians, including seven children, and two journalists. The ministry added that dozens of wounded people were being treated in intensive care units, with many critical conditions.

Increased concerns over rising humanitarian crisis

The latest attack comes as the region is already grappling with a deteriorating humanitarian crisis, with over half of the population in Gaza dependent on aid. The UN has warned that without an immediate ceasefire, more lives will be lost, and the humanitarian situation will worsen.
