Zoo worker killed by tiger in Jerusalem
Staff entered enclosure due to 'catastrophic failure'
A zookeeper is dead and another is fighting for his life after reportedly being attacked by a tiger at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo on Wednesday afternoon. According to initial investigations, the two staff members were cleaning the tiger enclosure when the animal attacked them.
The zoo confirmed the death of one of the zookeepers in a statement on Facebook, writing: "The zoo staff is seriously injured, and despite the medical team's efforts, our colleague Aaron Ben Tal did not survive the injuries."
Police spokesperson Volodya Egorov said that the surviving zookeeper is "fighting for his life" in hospital.
Zoo officials say incident was a "catastrophic failure"
Zoo officials said that the tiger, a 10-year-old female named Nora, had undergone a "full medical checkup" just one month ago, and that the incident was a "catastrophic failure" of the enclosure's protective measures.
A preliminary investigation suggests the zookeepers entered the enclosure via a door that was mistakenly left open. The zoo said it would be "conducting a thorough investigation" into the circumstances leading to the attack.
The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is a nonprofit organization focusing on conservation and education, and home to many endangered species.
